Swedish Language Courses

Elementary knowledge of Swedish can be both useful and productive when studying or living in a Swedish context. Consequently, the University offers courses in Swedish to incoming students who are enrolled in a degree programme or freestanding courses at the University.

Who can apply?

All international students at the University of Gothenburg are welcome to apply for a course.

When will the courses run?

  • Late afternoons or Saturdays
  • Once or twice a week
  • Ten lessons per level (total 30 hours)

Courses at four levels

  • Swedish 1
No previous knowledge of the Swedish language.
  • Swedish 2
You can use short phrases, understand the main point in short messages, write short notes, have passed the Swedish 1 course, or have equivalent skills.
  • Swedish 3
You can understand the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements, read very short, simple texts, communicate about simple and routine tasks, write short, simple notes and messages, have passed the Swedish 2 course, or have equivalent skills.
  • Swedish 4
You can understand the main points of clear standard speech, understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language, enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, write simple, connected texts on topics which are familiar, have passed the Swedish 3 course, or have equivalent skills.

How to register?

Before you register for a course, it is recommended that you use the  EUROPASS language passport for self-evaluation (or use the self assessment grid here). While this is not mandatory and we will not ask to see the results, it can help you find the right course depending on how well you know Swedish.

Note: It is not required that you have a Swedish "personnummer" or a GU student account when registering for the courses.

All places are offered on a first-come-first-served basis. You are welcome to apply for multiple courses, but registration for a second course is available only as space allows.

The courses do not give you any Higher Education Credits (hp), but we provide a certificate to students who have attended at least 80 % of the lessons.

Tuition fee

The courses are free of charge.

Information will be available when you are admitted to a course.
