Swedish Language Courses

Even if you can make yourself understood with English almost everywhere in Sweden, knowing the Swedish language is a way to come closer to society and culture. Knowing the language is also often crucial when applying for a job in Sweden. That is why The University of Gothenburg offers free courses in Swedish to admitted and registered international students, who study programs or independent courses at the University.

The courses are given in two different levels. Swedish 1, which requires no previous knowledge of Swedish, and Swedish 2, which is designed for those who already can use short phrases, understand the most important things in short messages, write short notes, have passed the course Swedish 1 or have equivalent knowledge. The level that is right for you is determined by self-assessment. If you’re not sure which one to choose, please contact our study counsellor.

Courses this autumn

Due to Covid-19, all courses during the autumn semester 2020 will be taught online via the video conference platform Zoom. Courses will start during the second half of October and teaching is given as follows:

Swedish 1: Wednesdays at 13.15–15.00. Two groups with 30 students in each group

Swedish 2: Friday at 13.15–15.00. Two groups with 30 students in each group

Registration opens Monday September 14 and closes Friday September 25. You will be able to register through a link on this page as soon as the courses open for registration.

The literature is mandatory and the book is needed from the first lesson. You can buy the book from Göteborgs Studentbokhandel, Götabergsgatan 17, https://en.campusbokhandeln.se/

After completed courses

After you have completed a course with at least 80% attendance, both Swedish 1 and Swedish 2 will get you a certificate. The courses provide no credits.

Please note that presence is mandatory. If you are unable to attend and have a valid absence, please notify your teacher immediately. Catching up a missed seminar can be difficult, so please make sure you can attend all of the seminars.
