Mentoring programme for newcomers on a permanent basis

The mentoring programme "University Friend" aims to introduce persons with a refugee background to higher education. In the first round, the university received more applications than it had places for. The programme was so successful that it is now offered on a permanent basis.

During the mentorship program, students and PhD students from the University of Gothenburg are matched with newly arrived persons in Sweden. The mentors and the mentees receive an introductory course and subsequently meet during three group meetings to discuss themes that are aimed at facilitating the mentee’s way into higher studies.

When the planned meetings have finished, the mentors and the mentees can decide for themselves if they want to go on meeting on their own. The idea is that the mentorship programme should be both fun and helpful, entail a mutual learning process for both the mentors and the mentees, where they share experiences and knowledge from different countries.

“I have learned more about how the university works with the help of people who have the same goals in life as I do. Now I want to work hard in order to begin studying as soon as possible”, writes one of the mentees in the evaluation form.

The mentors are all students at the University of Gothenburg, either at bachelor’s, master’s or Phd level. The mentees have either finished their secondary level education, begun or interrupted their university studies. The mentoring programme “University friend” is a collaboration between Göta Student’s Union, the University of Gothenburg with its’ doctoral committee and Refugee Guide (Flyktingguide/Språkvän) from the City of Gothenburg.

What are the efforts made by the University of Gothenburg towards refugees?
The mentoring programme is one of several activities carried out by the University of Gothenburg to facilitate the entry of persons with a refugee background into higher studies. For example the university regularly invite prospective students to information meetings with interpreters, language courses online free of cost, and Summer school, which was offered in June this year.
