To be able to transfer credits from previous university studies (either at the University of Gothenburg, at another Swedish university, or abroad), you first need to be admitted to a course. You can then submit a written request to transfer credits. In addition, we need the following documentation:
For credits you have received at the University of Gothenburg, or at another Swedish university:
For credits you have received at universities abroad:
All students applying for a transfer of credits must also complete and submit the following form:
See further instructions on the form.
There is no formal option to just sit an exam for a course. You cannot just take a test to complete the whole course; you must complete the assessments/exams that a course contains. However, as an enrolled student you may of course choose to only complete the assessments/exams for the course; you do not need to attend or participate in the rest of the course, provided that such participation is not required to pass the course. However, for most people it is difficult to pass the exams in a course without receiving any of the tuition. You would probably need to have acquired the knowledge in some other way previously to be successful in the exams.
You need to apply for and be accepted into the course and register for it and then register for one of the scheduled examination sessions for the exams in the course. NOTE that some course modules use ongoing oral assessment, which of course requires your physical presence. You therefore need to be careful when planning your studies so that you do not miss fulfilling the requirements for a module of this type.
If your application for credit transfer is rejected and you believe that the University’s decision is incorrect, you can appeal against it.
Your appeal must be in writing and you must include in your letter the decision that you wish to appeal against, the change in the decision that you want, and why you want the decision to be changed. In addition, the letter must contain the registration number of your case, and your contact details (name, postal address, e-mail address, telephone number and mobile phone number).
Your letter should be addressed to the Higher Education Appeals Board, but you should send it to Records Management (Registrator) at the University of Gothenburg. Contact details: https://www.gu.se/om-universitetet/kontakt
Your appeal must be lodged with the Records Management (Registrator) within three weeks from the day you were notified of the decision. The University determines whether the appeal has been received within this timeframe. If the appeal is received too late, it cannot be considered.
Provided that your appeal has been received in time, it will be sent together with an opinion from the Department where applicable to the Higher Education Appeals Board (Överklagandenämnden för högskolan, www.onh.se) which is a separate government agency. This agency will make the final decision.
What is stated here concerning exemptions from entry requirements applies only if you are accepted into one of our study programmes: the International Language Programme, Language and Intercultural Communication, the Professional Translation Programme, and the Secondary Teacher Education Programme. So this does not apply to courses that you apply for via antagning.se or universityadmissions.se. For courses applied for via antagning.se or universityadmissions.se, please contact the Admissions Office and see the information on antagning.se or universityadmissions.se.
Information about prior learning can be found at the bottom of this page
To be admitted to the next course in your programme, you must fulfil the entry requirements. The entry requirements for the next course in the study programme are always specified in the course syllabus. If you do not fulfil the entry requirements, but your circumstances are such that you would benefit from the content of the next course – you can apply to waive the entry requirements Submitting an application to waive entry requirements does not automatically mean that such an application will be granted. Once you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed.
Under what circumstances can entry requirements be waived?
Under what circumstances can entry requirements NOT be waived?
In your application to waive entry requirements, you should give an account of any special grounds, but above all you should state what you believe compensates for your failure to fulfil the entry requirements and how you can nevertheless benefit from the content of the course.
You can also apply for a test of your prior learning, which means that you demonstrate that you have the requisite skills to fulfil the entry requirements and thereby you are able to benefit from the course. Note that this also applies only to those who have been admitted to one of our study programmes, and where the Department is responsible for admissions. For information on courses and study programmes that are applied for via antagning.se/universityadmissions.se, see the information below under Prior learning – assessment of language skills and on antagning.se/universityadmissions.se.
After your application has been submitted, it will be examined by the Department. Prior learning can include:
To be able to assess prior learning, we also require written documentation which clearly shows the qualifications that your prior learning is equivalent to in your view. Where you want to cite prior learning, you must specify, and include written documentation of, the skills that you have which you believe indicate that you fulfil the entry requirements and can thus benefit from the course or study programme.
The Department can also offer a test of prior learning if you do not fulfil the entry requirements in languages for the Language and Intercultural Communication programme and if you have applied for one of our first-cycle courses in English, French, Spanish or German. The form below is not used for this purpose. Instead, read more at:
Applications to waive entry requirements or assessment of prior learning for programme courses where the Department is responsible for admissions are made using the form below. Submit the completed form to the course coordinator at the Department of Languages and Literatures at the latest three weeks before the course starts. Follow the instructions on the form carefully. Your application should be received by the Department at least three weeks before the start of the course. Applications received later than three weeks before the start of the course are processed if time permits and might therefore be processed after the start of the course.
This form must be completed:
