Apply online - here's how to do it:

• Use your active student account in Ladok or create an eduID
• Check your personal- and contact information in Ladok, see more information further down.
• Go to ”Degrees and certificates”, select ”Apply”, and following the instructions.

• Notification of the degree certificate will be sent to you by e-mail, please check that your e-mail address is correct. In Ladok, you can find it under "My pages".
• The first and last names shown in Ladok are those that will appear on the degree certificate. If something is not correct, you should wait to apply and first rectify the error. By contacting the Swedish Tax Agency, you can check that your information is correct there. Only the first name that is labelled as a given namn at the Swedish Tax Agency is retrieved to Ladok. • The personal identity number that appears in Ladok, is the one that will be written on the degree certificate. If you have been registered with a student identification number or a coordination number (samordningsnummer), and have subsequently received a Swedish civic registration number (personnummer) it should be updated in Ladok before you apply for a degree. To have the personal identity number updated in Ladok, contact one of the university’s Servicecenters.

Apply using a paper form

You must attach your transcript of records or copies of course certificates to your application form, clearly marking what courses are to be included in the qualification.

You can apply for a degree of doctor/licentiate via Ladok or using a paper form. Before applying for your degree, check that the information in Ladok is correct.

Contact your department and check that the following is entered in Ladok:

• the decision ”All courses completed” (“Alla kurser klara”)
• licentiate/doctoral thesis is registered with an approved result
• correct title/translation of licentiate /doctoral thesis

Apply online via Ladok

• When it's time to apply for your Degree of Doctor/Licentiate you log into Ladok with your X-account. To access the application, click on "Degrees and certificates", and then select “Apply”.

When applying, you should:

• choose Degree of Licentiate or Degree of Doctor
• mark which courses, in accordance with the decision ”All courses completed” (“Alla kurser klara”), that are to be included in your degree certificate

If you want to write something to the Office of Degrees, enter this in the box "Message to administrator”.

Apply on paper form

We primarily receive your application via Ladok, but in case you no longer have a login to the system, you can apply on paper form.

Form to apply for a licentiate and doctor degree (pdf)

If you have an active student account or login details to universityadmissions.se or eduID, you can create different types of verifiable transcripts via Ladok. For example, you can create a transcript which includes information about your issued degree certificate. The authenticity of the transcript can be controlled by a verification code.

If you need a signed and stamped transcript of records, contact Servicecenter or your department. You can also order it via web form.

Digital degree certificates are electronically stamped or electronically signed to prove their authenticity. You who have a digital degree certificate can send it to any recipient. In order for a recipient to be able to verify a digital degree certificate, they first need to download the document.

Degree certificates issued from 1 January 2024 have an e-stamp. In degree certificates issued before 1 January 2024 there is an e-signature. Both e-stamp and e-signature contain a link to a verification service that can be used to check the authenticity of the degree certificate.

If you have a degree registered in Ladok you can share it with any recipient, for example an employer.

The sharing is done by retrieving a control code and communicating it to a recipient, who can use the code to access information about the degree and its content. The same code can be used several times and for several recipients.

• Use your active student account or create an eduID
• Log in to Ladok for students and go to ”Degrees and certificates”
• Select ”Share certificate”
• Share the retrieved control code with any recipient

If you want to see for yourself what is shared with the recipient, you can go to Verify degree information and log in with the control code and your personal identity number.

Swedish documents may sometimes need to be legalised before they can be recognized as valid when they are presented to a foreign authority.

A legalisation is a stamp that certifies that the signature of a document is genuine. If you need to legalise your degree certificate, you can contact the Notary (Notarius Publicus), which can be found on the County Administrative Board's (Länsstyrelsen) website.

Normally, a new degree certificate will not be issued. This means that you can not get a new degree certificate if you have changed your first name or family name. Nor can you get a new degree certificate if you have changed your personal identity number from a student identification number or a coordination number (“samordningsnummer”) to a Swedish civic registration number (“personnummer”).

If you have changed your Swedish civic registration number ("personnummer") because you have been given protected personal data ("fingerade personuppgifter") by the Swedish authorities or have changed your gender affiliation, you have the right to receive a new degree certificate.

All degree certificates issued from 1st January 2003 and onwards are in both Swedish and English. If you have a degree certificate which is issued earlier than 2003 and want to get it translated you need to contact a translation agency.

Diploma Supplement for qualifications equivalent to today's first- and second-cycle levels was introduced to Swedish higher education institutions on 1 January 2003. Diploma Supplement for third-cycle qualifications was introduced on 1 July 2007. Diploma Supplements are not issued retrospectively at the University of Gothenburg.
