Finding your way on the University

Our study spaces are designed to provide you with a conducive study environment, including good lighting and ergonomics. Sometimes it's important to sit at a desk, and other times it's nice to lean back on a sofa. Therefore, there are also different types of study spaces.

The University of Gothenburg has defined various types of study spaces and other study locations:

Study spaces

• Study Workstation: A place for focused work for one person, either in a quieter environment or in an open space where conversations are allowed.
• Computer workstation: A place equipped with a desktop computer for focused work for one person, either in a quieter environment or in an open space where conversations are allowed.
• Reading spot: A place for focused work in a quiet environment, open space, or public areas like corridors or entrances.
• Group room: Rooms of varying sizes and layouts for group studies, sometimes available for booking.
• Group workspace: A workspace in an open area for focused group studies.

Other Study Locations:

• Landing spots: Permanent and temporary locations for various types of work.
• Temporary spaces in lecture halls: Places in lecture halls temporarily allocated for individual or group studies.

These different types of study spaces and locations are designed to cater to various study needs and work environments, allowing students to choose the most suitable setting for their academic activities.

Location
The Academy of Music and Drama is situated at four addresses in Gothenburg: Eklandagatan 86, Åvägen 24 (Brewhouse), Vasagatan 50 (HDK-Valand) and Triörgatan 1 (Andra stället).

Konstnärliga
Between 2025 and 2027, the Academy of Music and Drama, together with HDK-Valand, will move to a new building near Götaplatsen, known as Konstnärliga. Read more about the new building at https://www.gu.se/en/artistic-faculty/about-us/a-new-building-for-the-artistic-faculty

About the premises
During the construction period of Konstnärliga, The Academy of Music and Drama uses alternative premises. The premises at these four addresses provide education-specific study spaces for the department's students, as well as tailored spaces for teaching, research and public events.

The Academy of Music and Drama also has close collaborations with various cultural institutions, venues, and churches in Gothenburg, as well as with other departments at the University of Gothenburg.

Location
Campus Haga consists of three buildings:

• Dragonen, Sprängkullsgatan 19-21
• Sappören, Sprängkullsgatan 27-23
• Husaren, entrance via Pilgatan 19A

Study spaces
In the building Dragonen you'll find Studietorget, a larger area on two floors with reading areas, study workstations, computer stations, and group workstations.

In the houses Dragonen (floors 0-2) and Sappören (floors 1-2), there are also nearly 200 study spaces in group rooms, available when not used for teaching. The spaces can be booked by students at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Eating and drinking options
In Sappören (entrance from Sprängkullsgatan 23 or 25), you'll find Café Haga, which serves daily lunches, sandwiches, salads, and beverages. Snacks and coffee are also available at Lilla Kafé Haga (Sprängkullsgatan 19).

There are dining areas with microwaves at Café Haga, at the bottom of Dragonen's A-building (Sprängkullsgatan 19), and in Husaren's entrance at Pilgatan 19.

Who's located here
The Faculty of Social Sciences is situated at both Campus Haga and Campus Linné. At Haga, you'll find the School of Public Administration and the Department of Political Science (in Dragonen) and the Department of Sociology and Work Science and Department of Social Work (in Sappören).

Location
Campus Johanneberg is situated a ten-minute walk from Götaplatsen. The collaboration between the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology is extensive, and here we meet at the same campus.

The University's facilities are located in the following buildings:

• The Physics Building (consisting of three buildings: Origo, Soliden, and the Physics Research Building), Fysikgården 3
• The Mathematics Building (houses MVL, MVH och MVF, Chalmers tvärgata 3
• The EDIT-building, Rännvägen 6B 

Study spaces
All buildings at Campus Johanneberg provide areas for studying, but you need to take a course or programme with education here in order to have access to the buildings. There's plenty of study spaces; group rooms, a reading room for independent studies, and several computer labs, some being programme specific.

Eating and drinking options
There are plenty of microwaves and places to sit and eat your own food. Additionally, you have a wide range of restaurants and cafes to choose from. In the Physics Building, you'll find the Bra NyFiket café, and in the EDIT Building, there is the Linsen restaurant and café, offering various lunch options and a complete café selection.

Who's located here
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Physics offers education at this campus.

Campus Lindholmen is located on Lindholmen Island, right in the heart of Gothenburg's technology and innovation center. Students from both the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology have education here. The University is present in three buildings located next to each other:

• Patricia, Forskningsgången 6
• Jupiter, Hörselgång 5
• Kuggen, Lindholmsplatsen 1

Study Spaces
You can find individual study spaces and group rooms, but most of them are only available to students enrolled in various programmes at the IT Faculty. Students from the IT faculty have access (with a key card) to Chalmers learing common Kuggen, which is part of Chalmers Library. The library offers study spaces and bookable group rooms.

Eating and drinking options
In the area, there are several dining options. For instance, Café Norra Älvstranden in the Patricia building serves lunch, coffee, and a wide variety of baguettes and sandwiches. Along the pier and in the surrounding area, you'll find a vast selection of lunch restaurants and cafes.

Who's located here
The IT faculty is situated here, including the Department of Applied Information Technology and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Location
As the name suggests, Campus Linné is not far from Linnéplatsen. Campus Linné consists of the houses:

ALC Seminarieparken: Seminariegatan 1A
Annedalsseminariet: Seminariegatan 1A
KK2 (Department of Global Studies): Konstepidemins väg 2B 
KK2 (Faculty Chancellery): Konstepidemins väg 2A
Mediehuset (JMG): Seminariegatan 1B

Study spaces
At Annedalsseminariet, Psykologen and Mediehuset (JMG), there are numerous study spaces, including group rooms, group workstations, study workstations in a quiet reading room, reading areas, and computer stations. Many of the study spaces can be booked by students at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Non-reservable computer workstations are available in Mediehuset (JMG) and Psykologen.

Here, you'll also find the Social Sciences Library Föreningsgatan with around a hundred study spaces and 10 group rooms.

Eating and drinking options
You can find Kafé Annedal in Annedalsseminariet and Kafé Kastanjen in Psykologen. Student kitchens are located on the ground floor and the fifth floor in Annedalsseminariet, the fourth floor in Mediehuset, and the second floor in Psykologen.

Who's located here
This campus is home to the Department of Journalism, Media, and Communication, the School of Global Studies, and the Department of Psychology, as well as the Faculty of Social Sciences' office.

Location
Medicinareberget is located near the ​​Sahlgrenska University Hospital, between Guldheden and Linnéstaden. The campus consists of several buildings:

• Medicinarelängan: Medicinaregatan 3
• Odontologen: Medicinaregatan 12D
• Hälsovetarbacken: Arvid Wallgrens backe, hus 1 och 2, ingång F
• Natrium: Medicinaregatan 7B
• Wallenberg Conference Center: Medicinaregatan 20

Study spaces
In the various buildings, there are several study spaces, ranging from study workstations to group rooms. In Medicinarelängan and Natrium, there are plenty of tables and benches where you can study or have a meal.

Eating and drinking options
There are several cafes and lunch restaurants on Campus Medicinareberget and in the surrounding area: Hälsocaféet (Hälsovetarbacken), Café Anatomen and Salt & Syra (Medicinarelängan) and Lyktan (Conference Center Wallenberg). In addition, there are restaurants at the hospital and at Odontologen.

There are shared lunchrooms for students with access to microwave ovens where you can heat your own food in all buildings except Natrium. However, there is microwave ovens by the restaurant Salt&Syra, near the entrance to Natrium.

Who's located here
Most of the students at Medicinareberget are studying at the Sahlgrenska Academy or the Faculty of Science.

Location
Campus Steneby is situated in Dals Långed, 17 miles north of Gothenburg, at the address Hemslöjdsvägen 1. Here, teaching is conducted for students in metal art, furniture design and textile art.

Study spaces and eating and drinking options
Students at HDK-Valand have access to workshops, classrooms, workspaces, and a student kitchen, among other facilities.

Who's located here
HDK-Valand has educations here, as well as in Gothenburg.

Location
HDK-Valand is located at two addresses in Gothenburg:

• Kristinelundsgatan 6–8
• Vasagatan 50 (with an entrance also accessible from Storgatan 43).

The two buildings are very close to each other and within a short walking distance. (HDK-Valand is also present at Steneby in Dals Långed.)

Study spaces
At Kristinelundsgatan, the doors are open for anyone who wants to visit the Art Library or sit in the former café to study. The number of seats are limited.

At Vasagatan, only students with access cards can enter the main entrances. Students at HDK-Valand have access to education-specific study spaces. Education is primarily provided for students in fine arts, photography, film, literary composition, as well as teacher education in visual arts and crafts.

Eating and drinking options
HDK-Valand students have access to student kitchens. In the vicinity, there are also several kiosks, cafes, and restaurants.

Konstnärliga

Who's located here
The department HDK-Valand.

Location
Humanisten is located just a stone's throw away from Götaplatsen, next to Näckrosdammen and Renströmsparken. The main entrance is on Renströmsgatan 6.

Study spaces
There are plenty of study spaces for working on your own or in groups both at Humanisten and the nearby Humanist Library.

At Humanisten, the majority of the study spaces are in the newly built part of Humanisten,  adjacent to "Trappan," known as the "J-section." Here, you'll find study workstations, computer workstations, reading areas, group rooms, and group workstations spread across a quiet and an open zone. Some group rooms can be used as long as they are available, and others can be booked by students at the Faculty of Humanities.

Eating and drinking options
On the ground floor, you can find Café Näckrosen where you can buy coffee, sandwiches, and snacks during the day. Upstairs, you'll find Restaurang Näckrosen where you can buy lunch. At Trappan, there is a student dining area with a large kitchenette for storing and heating food.

Who's located here
As the name suggests, the Faculty of Humanities is located here.

Location
Idrottshögskolan (School of Sports) is located at Skånegatan 14B, just a few minutes' walk from both Heden and Korsvägen.

Study spaces
Access to Idrottshögskolan requires a GU card with the appropriate access rights, available for students in programmes at the Department of Food and Nutrition, and Sport Science (IKI). The facilities include a multi-sport hall, dance studio, specialised gym, study spaces, and lecture halls.

Who's located here
Parts of  the Department of Food and Nutrition, and Sport Science (IKI) has education here.

The Gothenburg University Library consists of eight libraries, all centrally located and most of them near the main campus areas.

Study spaces at the libraries
There are approximately 1,000 study spaces and 60 bookable group rooms spread across the eight libraries. If you have reading impairments such as dyslexia, visual impairment or other disabilities, you can also book a reading studio, a resource room equipped with technical aids.

The availability of food and beverage services varies between the libraries. Visit the University Library's website to find out what's available at each library.

Libraries and opening hours

Location
At Magasinsgatan 4 in Mariestad, students enrolled in the Construction Craftsmanship programme and the Garden and Landscape Craftsmanship programme have their classes.

Study spaces
The library offers quiet study spaces, and there is also a silent reading room adjacent to it. On the same floor, you'll find a computer room and group rooms. Additional study spaces are available on the 3rd and 4th floors.

Eating and drinking options
There is a café that serves coffee and sandwiches. The café also provides refrigerators and microwaves where you can store and heat your packed meals.

Who's locates here
The Department of Conservation is located here, and they also have facilities in the Natrium building at Campus Medicinareberget.

Location
At the Marine Infrastructure, research and teaching within the marine sciences take place. The center comprises two marine research stations on the West Coast: Tjärnö Marine Laboratory located near Strömstad and Kristineberg Center near Fiskebäckskil.

Study spaces
The lessons at Tjärnö and Kristineberg often involve field trips on larger ships, or small boats, or shallow sea floors in waders. Both stations have laboratories, field equipment, and other equipment necessary for conducting studies.

Eating and drinking options
During a course, students are normally lodged in two bed rooms, and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in the mess. Students at special projects and master’s courses can store and cook food in a residence building kitchen.

Location
Pedagogen is located right next to Grönsakstorget in central Gothenburg and consists of three buildings:

• Pedagogen, House A - Main Entrance Västra Hamngatan 25

• Pedagogen, House B - Main Entrance Läroverksgatan 15

• Pedagogen House C - Main Entrance Läroverksgatan 5

Study spaces
In all three Pedagogen buildings, there are various types of student workspaces for group work or individual studies. In the Education Library (Building A), there are also study spaces, computer workstations, and a quiet reading room.

There are a few areas that are only accessible to students registered for a course at one of the Faculty of Education's departments, including bookable group rooms in B and C houses, as well as the student space in the basement of house C.

Eating and drinking options
In A and B houses, there are cafes and spaces with microwave ovens for students. Both Café Deli Marché Pedagogen (house A) and Café Grönsakstorget (house B) offers breakfast, coffee, cold beverages, and a selection of pastries, sandwiches, and salads.

In house C, there is a student area with a pantry (kitchen and microwaves), only accessible to students registered in a course at one of the Faculty of Education's departments.

Who's located here
The Faculty of Education is based here:

• In A house, you'll find the Department of Education and Special Education (IPS);
• In B house, the Department of Pedagogical, Curricular and Professional Studies (IDPP), and the Department of Education, Communication and Learning (IPKL).
• In house C, there's the Department of Food and Nutrition, and Sport Science (IKI).

Location
At Pusterviksgatan 3 (floor 3), near Järntorget, the University has facilities with study spaces available to all students at the University of Gothenburg. The premises are not staffed, but security guards regularly patrol the area.

Access
To enter the premises you use your GU card and pin code, both at the card reader at the entrance from the street, at the door to the elevator, and at the door on floor 3. The premises are open during the day on weekdays. When closing, security guards make a round to empty the premises.

Opening hours:
Monday to Thursday: 8.00–20.00
Friday: 8.00–19.00

Study spaces
There are 130 study spaces:

• Single spaces: 61 places with regular desks, 8 with standing desks.
• Group rooms: 11 rooms in total, 7 smaller and 4 larger. Group rooms cannot be booked and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
• Lounges: 4 in total, two larger and two smaller, not all are furnished yet.

Eating and drinking options
There is a large kitchen with dining areas, refrigerators, and microwaves.

Who's located here
There is no teaching conducted at Pusterviksgatan 3. The premises are centrally administered, unlike our teaching locations where faculties and departments are responsible.

Location
The School of Business, Economics and Law is located on two addresses at the upper end of Vasagatan, near Haga:

• The main buildning is located at Vasagatan 1 (consisting of houses A–J)
• The School of Business also has premises at Viktoriagatan 13.

Study spaces
At Vasagatan 1, there are several study spaces around the school, both in the hallways and in the school courtyard. You can also sit and study at Hyllan, the restaurant's upper floor. The Economics library's reading room offers 390 reading places. Students at the school can also book group rooms and computers.

At Viktoriagatan 13, you will find several lecture halls and group rooms. Many students choose to study in the Piazza, located on the ground floor.

Eating and drinking options
At Vasagatan 1, you can find Handelsrätten and Hyllan (on the third and fourth floor of the E-building, respectively), where you can purchase lunch or heat your lunchbox.

At Viktoriagatan 13, there are microwaves located close to the Piazza.

Who's located here
As the name suggests, the School of Business, Economics and Law is located here, along with the Department of Business Administration (J-house), the Department of Law (C-house), the Department of Economy and Society (Viktoriagatan 13), the Department of Economics (E-house and D-house), the Graduate School (B-house), and several other units.

Location
Studenternas hus at Götabergsgatan 17 is a central meeting place for students at the University of Gothenburg. It offers various spaces for student activities, including rooms for gatherings, study spaces, and a stage for performances.

Study spaces
Adjacent to the main hall, you can find the so-called "tidningsrummet," which provides 50 study places.

Eating and drinking options
There is a café area with a pantry and 25 seating places.

Who's located here
Göta studentkår, Konstkåren, and GUS have offices in Studenternas hus. You can also find Kårkällarn, Götheborgske Spionen, Studentradion K103, and Campusbokhandeln in the building.

Location
The main building of the University is located in Vasaparken, at Universitetsplatsen 1.

Study spaces
Vasaparken does not have study places.

Events at Vasaparken
Vasaparken serves as a central meeting place for the University of Gothenburg. The large hall is often used for welcome programs and graduation ceremonies. It's also common for larger events, conferences, and seminars to take place in the large hall or Torgny Segerstedtsalen.

Who's located here
The main building houses various administrative offices, including the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and administrative support for University Management. There is no teaching at Vasaparken.

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed in the University's buildings and premises.

Assistance dogs (guide dogs) are allowed, provided that it is a trained and certified assistance dog that the person has been prescribed. The assistance dog must carry his service blanket and the dog handler the associated identification. The dog must not pose a safety risk, conflicting requests for accessibility have been resolved, and there must be documentation of this.

If an assistance dog is to accompany you, you need to talk to the department responsible for your education beforehand.

In most of our premises, there are quiet rooms or calm spaces. Information about the specific campus or building you are in can be found under the details provided by faculties and departments on this page.

There is almost always access to a restroom with a changing table, and in most cases, there is also a resting room or another space that can be used for breastfeeding or pumping. Please inquire at the nearest Servicecenter or your department to find out how to access the resting room.

The handling of lost and found items varies between campuses and buildings. For more details, please refer to the information provided by the faculties and departments.

Error report
If you discover an issue or damage in the facilities, such as a broken door handle or poor ventilation, you should contact your institution or Servicecenter, which can then address the matter further. For more information, please refer to the details provided by the faculties and departments on this page.

If something happens to you in the facilities
If you are hurt on University premises, during your studies or on your way to or from the University, you should make a report. The University of Gothenburg has a central system, called the IA system, where you report deviations, incidents and can suggets improvements.
