The EUTOPIA Summer School in European Identities is an intensive international programme bringing together students from across the EUTOPIA Alliance for a week of academic exchange, debate, and collaborative reflection on the future of Europe.

Hosted by Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona from 6 to 10 July 2026, the Summer School will gather approximately 50 students from EUTOPIA partner universities (around five students per institution).

Participants will engage critically with key European issues through lectures, workshops, simulations, debates, and interactive activities led by academics and practitioners from across the Alliance.

The overarching theme of the 2026 edition is European Identities, and theacademic programme is structured around three interconnected sub-themes:

1. Why European Integration?
Exploring the historical, political, and economic foundations of European integration.

2. What is the European Union?
Examining how the European Union functions as a political and institutional system.

3. Who Shares Values and Identities?
Reflecting on citizenship, belonging, diversity, and borders in contemporary Europe.

Who will you do this with?

5 students from each EUTOPIA University will be able to participate.

Am I eligible to apply?

The summer school is aimed at students in their third year of study or above who have a strong interest in European issues, identities, governance, citizenship, or related fields. To be eligible, you must be enrolled at the University of Gothenburg at the bachelor's, master's, or doctoral level, both at the time of application and during the event itself.

Students from all academic disciplines are welcome to apply.

Please note that exchange students are not eligible to participate in this event.

The application has to be completed and submitted by the deadline 7 June 2026 at 23:59 CET (11:59 pm).

Why should I apply?

The Summer School offers a unique opportunity to engage with students from across Europe, explore key questions relating to European identities and integration, and develop intercultural, critical thinking, and collaborative skills in an international learning environment.

How will the students be selected?

Selections will be based on a variety of criteria, including open-ended answers in the application, mix of backgrounds, motivation, and availability to participate in all stages of the EUTOPIA Summer School.

We are looking for students who will be fully engaged in the event, and with the EUTOPIA spirit of collaboration and peer support.

Is there any funding?

Participants will receive funding to support travel, accommodation, and meals. There is additional funding available if you travel by approved green means.
