Assessment and grades

You will receive your result within 15 working days. Grades cannot be appealed, but if you think something has gone wrong, you can request a review. You also have the right to retake the examination if you do not pass.

View your grade

You will be notified of your grade no later than 15 working days after the examination or the end of the course.

The grading decision is always documented in Ladok, but your department may inform you of your grade in another way first.. If so, your grade should also be visible in Ladok within five working days.

How grades are decided

Your grade is always decided by a specifically nominated examiner, who assesses your performance and makes the grading decision independently — even if colleagues have assisted with the assessment. The decision is based on your individual performance in relation to the intended learning outcomes of the course.

Grades can be decided for a component of a course or for the course as a whole. No overall average grade is awarded for higher education qualifications., such as a Grade Point Average (GPA).

Calculate your average grade

If a foreign university or employer requires a GPA, you can calculate an equivalent GPA using: https://www.scholaro.com/gpa-calculator/.

Collecting your marked examination

Paper examination

You normally collect your examination from your department's student office or equivalent. Your department will inform you of the procedure.

Digital examination (DISA)

If you took a digital examination in DISA, you will find it in the system once it has been assessed. Your department will let you know when it is available. Examinations are stored in DISA for two years and then deleted automatically.

View your examination by logging in to DISA (you can use a computer, tablet, or phone) and clicking on Archive.

You can then:

  • View submitted answers – see your examination exactly as it appeared when you wrote it, including total marks and marks per question.
  • Download – download your examination as a PDF containing the questions, answers, and a marks summary.
  • View feedback – find any comments left by the teacher.
  • Delete – examinations written in the spring semester 2025 or earlier can be deleted from DISA by signing them out. Make sure to download a copy first — a signed-out examination cannot be recovered.

Grading Systems

The University of Gothenburg uses five different grading systems with different grading scales. The grading scale shows which grades may be awarded for a course, which scale that applies to your course is stated in the course syllabus. When printing a transcript or course certificate, the grading scale can be shown in a footnote.

Grading scales

  • Two grade levels:
    U Underkänd/Fail, G Godkänd/Pass
  • Three grade levels:
    U Underkänd/Fail, G Godkänd/Pass, VG Väl godkänd/Pass with Distinction
  • Four grade levels (U–AB):
U Underkänd/Fail, B Godkänd/Pass, Ba Icke utan beröm godkänd/Pass with Credit, AB Med beröm godkänd/Pass with Distinction
  • Four grade levels (U–5):
    U Underkänd/Fail, 3 Godkänd/Pass, 4 Väl godkänd/Pass with Credit, 5 Mycket väl godkänd/Pass with Distinction
  • Six grade levels:
    A Utmärkt/Excellent, B Mycket bra/Very Good, C Bra/Good, D Tillfredsställande/Satisfactory, E Tillräcklig/Sufficient, F Underkänd/Fail

Grade statistics

Grade statistics show how passing grades are distributed across grade levels on your course. This makes it easier to compare your course with similar courses at other universities and higher education institutions, even if they use different grading scales.

Grade statistics are only produced for courses that have been running for at least two years. If your course meets that requirement, you can request to have the statistics included in your transcript.

Affecting your grade

Review of a grading decision

A grading decision cannot be appealed, but you can request that the examiner reconsiders their decision if you feel the assessment was not carried out correctly. The request should be made in writing via your department, which will inform you of the procedure.

Important to know:

  • You cannot have a passing grade changed to a fail.
  • You cannot withdraw a submitted examination to avoid being graded.

Supplementation

Supplementation means you continue working on the same task you have already submitted — you will not be given a new task. You must submit the supplementation within the stated deadline. If you do not, the result will be a fail.

Whether supplementation is permitted for an examination will be stated in the course syllabus.

Retaking an examination

In addition to the ordinary examination session, you must be offered further sessions within a reasonable timeframe.

When you can participate:

  • You must have received a grading decision.
  • Grade improvement is not permitted — you cannot retake an examination to raise a passing grade.
  • If you are under investigation for suspected cheating, you are still entitled to retake the examination, even if the grade for your first attempt has not yet been decided.

Changing examiner

If you have failed the same examined component twice, you can request a change of examiner.
