GU card

You will receive an email when your card is ready for pick up, usually within 2-5 working days. The email is sent to your student email address (gus*****@student.gu.se). You can also see the status of your order in the GU card portal.

For security reasons, you can only pick up your own GU card and you have to bring a valid ID, such as a passport or driving licence.

The name on the GU card is connected to your name in Ladok, so if the name on the card is wrong the information have to be updated in Ladok.

If you have changed your name (or need to change any other information in Ladok like your civic registration number) please visit Servicecenter and bring an updated passport, driving license or certificate from Skatteverket.

When the information has been changed in all the systems, which may take up to seven days, please contact Servicecenter again to get a new copy of your card with the correct name.

If you are doing remote studies, you do not usually need to get a GU card.

As a distance student, the university library can help you if you want to borrow books. To access the university library digital resources, you use your student account. More information can be found on the University Library page.

Using the library as a distance student

No, all GU cards are updated automatically. The access functions works when you have an active course registration.

To be able to order the GU card, you need an active student account. If you experience problems with the GU card portal, please try clearing cookies in your browser or change to a different browser.

To upload a photo to your GU card, click on the button to choose a picture. You can download an existing photo from your computer or phone. If you order from a smartphone, you can also choose to take a new photo with your camera. Keep in mind that the photo you upload must not be larger than 5Mb. Accepted formats are jpeg, jpg and png.

The GU card can be used as a library card as soon as you pick it up. Contact the library if you still cannot borrow books.

Are you registered on a course?

You need an active course registration in Ladok to have access to the premises at your faculty. Make sure you are registered on your course in Ladok.

Do you have the right access?

As a student, you have access to public spaces and computer rooms at the faculty where you study. Remember that the access at nights and weekends might be different than during office hours. Find out what applies at the faculty where you study.

Have you entered the wrong PIN code?

If the light on the card reader turns green when you hold up your card but turns red once you have entered your PIN code, you have entered the wrong code. Please contact Servicecenter for help or change the PIN code yourself in the GU card portal.

Is your GU card blocked?

If the light on the card reader turns red immediately after you have shown your card, and before you have entered your PIN code, you might not have access to the premises, or your card might be blocked. Your card can get blocked if you have entered the wrong PIN code too many times. Contact Servicecenter for help.

Note that you must hold up your card in front of the card reader first, then enter your PIN once you have removed your card. Otherwise, the card reader might not be able to read your card.

Is your GU card broken?

If none of the reasons above is the problem, the card might be physically damaged. Visit a Servicecenter to check the card. Do not make any holes in the card as it damages the built-in chip.
