Insurance
You are covered by an accident insurance during school hours and while traveling to and from the University. You are advised to inquire about your private insurance coverage and read the necessary information in case of illness and injury.
Insurance for studies in Sweden
We've summarised the essentials here. For the full terms, visit Kammarkollegiet's page on insurance for university students in Sweden.
Who the insurance covers
Kammarkollegiet has an accident insurance policy that covers students at Swedish universities.
All students registered at the University of Gothenburg are automatically covered. You don't need to take out the insurance yourself or pay anything – it's free and included with your registration.
When the insurance applies
The insurance covers accidents during school hours – on University premises, on an internship or at a workplace approved by the University, or on the direct journey to and from the University. It also covers distance study, but only when the accident is directly linked to the study task itself.
It doesn't cover you in your free time, during activities not arranged by the University, or if you make a stop along the way.
What the insurance covers
The insurance can cover things like healthcare costs and compensate you for lost income if you're unable to work because of the injury. It doesn't cover damage to property.
Making a claim in Sweden
Fill in and sign Kammarkollegiet's claim form. Send it, together with your receipts, to Kammarkollegiet by email (forsakring@kammarkollegiet.se) or post (Kammarkollegiet, 651 80 Karlstad).
Keep your own insurance in mind
Neither the insurance in Sweden nor the one abroad covers everything – both are meant as basic protection, not a replacement for insurance of your own.
- In Sweden, that means your private accident and home insurance should cover you outside your study time – including at home and during your free time, and for any damage to property, none of which the University's insurance covers.
- If you study or do an internship abroad (Student OUT), no home insurance is included, and the property cover has limitations – worth checking the terms if you're bringing valuable equipment.
Our recommendation: go through your existing insurance cover before you travel or move, so you know exactly what's covered and by whom.
Studies or internships abroad – Student OUT
We've summarised the essentials here. For the full terms, visit Kammarkollegiet's detailed information on Student OUT.
Who the insurance covers
If you're registered at the University of Gothenburg and studying or doing an internship abroad as part of an exchange, you're covered by Kammarkollegiet's Student OUT insurance.
If you're a "freemover" – that is, studying abroad on your own, outside the University's exchange agreements – you're not covered by this insurance.
When the insurance applies
The insurance applies around the clock in your host country, 14 days before and after your study or internship period. Your exact period is stated on your insurance certificate.
It doesn't apply:
- For distance study from Sweden – the insurance only applies once you're physically in the country where you're studying or doing an internship, or on the direct journey there and back
- For trips to other countries during your exchange. If you're travelling on, you'll need your own private insurance for that.
- In countries, or parts of countries, that the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) advises against all travel to. If the advisory comes after you've already travelled, transitional cover applies for up to 30 days, so you have time to get home.
What the insurance covers
Student OUT only covers what isn't already covered by other insurance or by law. If you already have access to healthcare in the country – for example, because you're a citizen there or have lived there before – you should use that cover first.
The insurance includes:
- personal injury cover
- medical and dental care, and repatriation cover
- visits by relatives (in the event of life-threatening injury or illness)
- interruption cover (in the event of a relative's life-threatening injury, death, or major property damage)
- property cover
- delayed baggage and cash transfer
- crisis and disaster cover
- liability and legal expenses cover.
If something happens abroad
Emergency care abroad
You choose your own healthcare provider in the country where you're studying or doing your internship. Pay the fee yourself and keep the receipt – you'll submit it later with your claim.
For travel within Europe: bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from Försäkringskassan. With the card, you'll get necessary healthcare and dental care on the same terms and at the same cost as the country's own residents.
