A warm welcome to all new students

Published

This fall, the Sahlgrenska Academy greeted all incoming students with a joint introduction at the Wallenberg Conference Center. The aim was to give everyone an inspiring start to their studies – a time that should be not only educational, but also fun and meaningful.

It was the first time that students from all programs were brought together for a shared introduction. Because so many begin in the fall, students were welcomed in groups, with the largest and the smallest programs – medicine and audiology – kicking things off.

A pleasant city

“I have people close to me with hearing loss, so I know that world. I want to be part of making a difference,” said Linnea Thalin, a new audiology student from Lund.

“It feels good, actually not that nervous. It really helped that we had a mentor coffee yesterday, so I’ve already found a few people to hang out with,” said Herman Borgen, starting medical school.

“I’ve been working as a waiter for two years, and now felt it was time to start my education. I enjoy taking care of others, so medicine feels like a good choice for me,” said medical student Fredrik Fransson.

“I’ve wanted to be a doctor for a long time. Gothenburg seems like a great city with lots of opportunities. Right now it feels wonderful – and maybe a little intimidating,” said Leo Hallstensson, who just moved from Torsby.

“It feels great to have found my direction and to know what I’ll be devoting myself to for many years ahead,” added medical student Christian Wassenius.

A will to help

Many of the new students shared the motivation behind their choice of studies.

“There’s a shortage of staff in healthcare, and I feel I want to contribute. I’m an open person who enjoys talking to people, and I think good communication is an important part of working as a radiology nurse,” said Shadmehr Taheri, who just started that program.

“I’ve been thinking about becoming a dental technician for years. It’s something completely different from sitting at a computer all day. I like that it’s partly technical, that I get to use my hands, and at the same time help others,” said Ola Kjellgren, who recently moved from Åland after a career in IT to study dental technology in Gothenburg.

Friends for life

Dean Jenny Nyström opened the introduction by emphasizing that the academy wants students not only to succeed academically, but also to enjoy their lives outside of studies. She reminded them that classmates often become friends for life – but also that teachers are always there to support them.

The student union also took the stage. Alva Jonsson, chair of SAKS, highlighted the wide range of social and academic activities available – including Programkampen this very week, where new students from different programs compete in Slottsskogen park.

“There’s something for everyone through the union – sports, theater, music, gaming, outdoor life, and cultural experiences. The sense of belonging you get is what keeps you motivated when the books feel heavy,” Alva said.

Commitment to the students

A similar introduction was held last spring, but only for the few programs that start in the spring semester. This fall marked the premiere for a joint introduction for all programs. The concept was first tested by the Institute of Health and Care Sciences, with very positive feedback.

The introduction was made possible thanks to the strong commitment of both teachers and administrators. The goal is to give every new student the best possible start – and help them quickly find their place and feel at home at the Sahlgrenska Academy.
