Apply for a Scholarship for a Master’s Thesis in Materials Science

Are you planning to do your master’s thesis in materials science during the 2026/27 academic year? Through WISE Research Master’s Thesis, you can apply for a scholarship of SEK 75,000.

WISE Research Master’s Thesis is a research preparatory programme for master’s students in natural sciences. The programme gives you an opportunity to experience what it is like to work as a researcher and to strengthen your competitiveness for future PhD positions in Materials Science for Sustainability.

You can apply for the scholarship if you are enrolled in a master’s programme in chemistry or physics at the University of Gothenburg and plan to do your master’s thesis during the 2026/27 academic year, either in Karl Börjesson’s research group at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology or in Johan Åkerman’s research group at the Department of Physics.

WISE awards a maximum of four scholarships of SEK 75,000 each.

The application deadline is 6 September 2026.

How to apply

Send your application to karl.borjesson@gu.se and write “Application for WISE Research Master’s Thesis” in the subject line.

Your application must include:

  • your name and personal identity number
  • the date when you plan to start your master’s thesis
  • a certificate showing that the supervisor has approved that you carry out your project in one of the research groups mentioned above, including the name of the supervisor, or a synopsis of your project including the name of your preferred supervisor
  • a transcript of records showing courses and grades from your previous bachelor’s and master’s studies. Your bachelor’s studies may be from another university
  • a certificate of registration showing that you are enrolled in a degree programme at the University of Gothenburg. 

Particular importance will be given to your previous courses and academic results when the applications are assessed.
