Borrow organ compositions by several female composers

Published

The anthology The Oxford book of organ music by women composers has been purchased by the Humanities Library. The book contains over 40 compositions from different periods and styles, by more than forty female composers.

The works have a historical range from the 16th century to the present and are of varying degrees of difficulty. Included in the anthology are also biographical articles and comments on the works.

First female cathedral organist

A Swedish composer, Elfrida Andrée, is included in the anthology. Described as a female pioneer in the field, she is also seen as a pioneering composer and orchestral conductor. Elfrida Andrée composed her first work at the age of 24. In 1867, she became the world's first female cathedral organist at Gustavi Cathedral in Gothenburg.

More familiar names

For those in the know, several well-known composers are included in the anthology. These include Amy Beach, Nadia Boulanger, Cécile Chaminade, Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Florence Price, Clara Schumann and Ethel Smyth.
