How to reduce the risk of theft at the University

Published

As the holidays approach, we’d like to remind you how you, as a student, can help reduce the risk of theft. Keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of who is moving around on university premises – it makes a difference for both you and others.

Simple Steps to Help Protect Yourself and Others

  • Keep an eye on your belongings. Never leave your laptop, phone or bag unattended – not even for a short moment or in locked corridors.
  • Make sure doors close behind you. Doors that are meant to be closed and locked should remain that way.
  • Don’t let unauthorised individuals in. If someone you don’t recognise wants to follow you into a locked area, ask who they are looking for.
  • Trust your instincts. If you see someone unfamiliar spending time in university spaces without a clear reason, don’t hesitate to ask or contact security: 031-786 17 55.

Report Thefts and Incidents

All students can report incidents through the university’s IA system. It’s important to report thefts of personal belongings as well, as this helps the university take preventive measures and implement targeted actions.

If something belonging to you is stolen on the university's premises, you must file a police report and report the theft in IA. As a private individual, you are responsible for submitting the report to the police.

If something belonging to the university is stolen, you report the theft in IA, but the university is responsible for the police report.
