During the spring, a project was carried out to explore the possibility of relocating the department and its activities to Medicinareberget. One of the sub-projects has focused on teaching facilities and study environments at Medicinareberget, with participation from both the Natural Sciences Section and the IT Section at the Göta Student Union, as well as the Sahlgrenska Academy Student Union. On 18 June, the Faculty Board decided that the move would be carried out.
“Students have been included throughout the entire process, and for the move to be successful, this involvement needs to continue going forward. The move will bring the entire faculty's students closer together and create an even stronger sense of community and shared identity,“ says Petrus Hagby, Chair of the IT Section at the Göta Student Union.
In the 2025/2026 academic year, preparations for the move will begin. Study spaces may need to be updated, signs improved so students can find them more easily, and teaching rooms adapted to meet current needs.
From the autumn semester 2026, the Faculty of Science and Technology will operate on two campuses in Gothenburg - Medicinareberget and Johanneberg.
Why has a move been investigated?
In 2023, Chalmers decided to move virtually all its activities from Lindholmen to Campus Johanneberg, which affects the study environment at Lindholmen. At the same time, an organisational change was implemented where the IT Faculty merged with the Faculty of Science to form the Faculty of Science and Technology.
During the autumn, a potential move for the Department of Applied Information Technology and possible locations were investigated, with Natrium ultimately emerging as the most suitable location.
The GU/Chalmers joint Department of Computer Science and Engineering will move all its activities from Lindholmen to Campus Johanneberg by 2029 at the latest.
