The IT Faculty discontinues as an independent unit

Published

The IT Faculty will cease to exist as an organisational unit, and its two departments will be transferred to the Faculty of Science. This decision was made by the University of Gothenburg's Board on September 11. While the IT departments' new home will be effective from January 1, 2025, the physical relocation will occur at a later date.

In light of Chalmers’ decision to move from Lindholmen, an investigation into the organisation of the IT Faculty was conducted last year. The investigation proposed the dissolution of the IT Faculty and the transfer of its two departments – the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Applied Information Technology – to other faculties. In the spring, the university's Vice-Chancellor proposed to the University Board that the University of Gothenburg follow this recommendation, and that the IT departments be transferred to the Faculty of Science.

The University Board has now made a decision that will result in the IT Faculty being dissolved as an organisational unit. During the fall, efforts will be made to best integrate the two IT departments into the Faculty of Science.

"I’m pleased that the process can now move forward with the Board’s decision," says Vice-Chancellor Malin Broberg. "There is great engagement from all involved, and a strong desire to drive strategic work in the IT and STEM fields with the new faculty as the base."

Formally established on January 1, 2025

The new faculty will be formally established on January 1, 2025, when the IT Faculty's administrative office also dissolves. This means that the two IT departments will contribute to the financing of the new faculty's administrative office and leadership. Other financial matters, such as education assignments, research grants, and facility costs, will remain separate for the former faculties throughout 2025. The goal is for the IT departments to be fully integrated by 2026.

No relocations will take place during 2025. In the long term, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, which is shared with Chalmers, will move to Campus Johanneberg. As for the Department of Applied Information Technology, an investigation into suitable facilities is currently underway.

A discussion is also ongoing regarding a potential name change for the Faculty of Science. The reorganisation efforts are supported by the Vice-Chancellor, who is funding a project manager and an in-depth facilities investigation for the Department of Applied Information Technology.
