Title of the lecture and brief description

"An overview of Indian Health System"
The Indian healthcare system is diverse, consisting of both public and private sectors. Public healthcare is provided by government-run hospitals and clinics, often facing challenges such as underfunding and overcrowding. The private sector offers more advanced facilities but can be costly, resulting in accessibility issues for many. Additionally, traditional medicine, such as Ayurveda and homeopathy, plays a significant role in healthcare alongside modern practices.

Achal Kudtarkar, Incoming Erasmus + ICM Student from Nitte INDIA

I am, Achal Kudtarkar, a dedicated Master of Public Health (MPH) student at the Department of Public Health, K S Hegde Medical Academy, NITTE (DU). I have always been passionate about improving population health and disparities; especially in terms of chronic illnesses, comorbidities, lifestyle disorders, and communicable and non-communicable diseases. Thus, I embarked on my journey of becoming a public health professional.

I have maintained a strong academic record with a CGPA of 8.1 during my first year of MPH. My comprehensive coursework consisting of epidemiology, biostatistics, health system and policy, health promotion, health economics, and more has provided me solid foundation in public health. I hold an undergraduate degree in BSc. in Anaesthesia Technology from Goa Medical College, Goa. Prior to joining MPH, I was employed as an Anaesthesia Technologist at Goa Medical College and Hospital where I gained practical experience in assisting with Anaesthesia administration in operation theatres, and critical care and emergency response in ICU settings.

In addition, the public health department, Govt. of Goa recognized me as a “COVID WARRIOR” for my work as a COVID frontline worker during the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with my academic journey, I actively participated in the COVID-19 vaccination & routine immunization monitoring activity as an ‘External Monitor’ at Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka state on behalf of the WHO, NPSP, Mangalore Unit. I contributed to the “Breathe Easy Campaign” by the Resource Centre for Tobacco Control, PGIMER as a volunteer. I have also presented a paper titled “Impact of COVID-19 on health-seeking behavior among the rural population with chronic illness of Karkala Taluk” during the ETHOS 5.0 conference.

My active engagement in various public health and data management-related workshops and conferences shows my commitment to continued learning and professional growth. I have functioned as a cultural coordinator and public health workshop coordinator within the institution and these responsibilities showcase my leadership and communication skills which I feel are essential in the field of public health. My internship with the Foundation of Healthcare Technologies Society, New Delhi, has been an invaluable experiential learning experience that imparted me with skills and knowledge about improving community health outcomes through interventional research and the integration of healthcare and technology. I actively participated in the “Swasthya Pahal”- Health for All initiative, which focuses on self-management of NCDs, where I contributed by conducting health screening for hypertension, diabetes, obesity, etc.; utilized data entry tools for efficient data collection and provided personalized nutrition and lifestyle counseling.

Moreover, through my involvement in the RISE initiative, I aided in promoting its goals of empowering underprivileged women and young girls. I have also been a part of SHINE, a multilingual digital health intervention wherein adherence and customer satisfaction data were collected through follow-up calls after health camps. Furthermore, I reviewed and updated academic modules and gained proficiency in content curation using various design and writing tools. This experience also enhanced my interest in health informatics and using digital health technology to address health issues.
