Tjärnö Study area

Tjärnö, located on Kosterfjorden, is home to one of two research stations that form part of the marine infrastructure engaged in research and teaching in marine sciences. The marine infrastructure also includes Kristineberg on Gullmarsfjorden.

How to get here

Västtrafik offers bus and train services between Gothenburg and Strömstad, as well as buses between Strömstad and Tjärnö.
You can take the train (Vy) from Oslo to Halden and the bus (Västtrafik) from Halden to Strömstad.
Flixbus operates bus services between Gothenburg, Strömstad and Oslo. The bus stops at Blomsholm, on the E6, and you will need a taxi or other transport to get to Strömstad town centre and on to Tjärnö Marine Laboratory.

Opening hours

The reception desk, located one floor up from the entrance to the main building, has fixed opening hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., but assistance is also available at other times when staff are on site. The doors are unlocked during the day; at other times, an access card is required to enter the premises.

Accessibility

The premises are adapted for people with disabilities. There is a lift to move between the floors in the main building and the Lars Afzelius Laboratory, and a ramp to enter the dining room. One room in the white accommodation (student housing) is adapted for people with disabilities.

Students at the Department of Marine Sciences

There are also doctoral students based at Tjärnö, researchers and professors, visiting researchers and students from other universities and upper secondary schools who are completing part of their education at Tjärnö.

Marine studies at the University of Gothenburg are also conducted at Kristineberg Centre.

Lecture halls and other teaching facilities

Tjärnö has a large lecture hall with seating for 100 people adjacent to the aquarium. In addition, there are several classrooms, conference rooms, course laboratories, laboratories, smaller group rooms and other meeting places for study and work. Much of the study takes place in the field or on the research vessel Nereus. Tjärnö also has its own aquarium, which is used for teaching, and a workshop.

Library

There is a library on the first floor of the main building. There are also meeting rooms with technology for remote participation.

Study areas

Tjärnö has a computer room on the top floor of the main building with several study areas, screens, mice and keyboards. There are workspaces in every bedroom in the accommodation. There are also a few study areas in the library.

Food, refreshments and fika on campus

The dining hall at the Tjärnö Laboratory is open Monday to Friday (except on public holidays). 
Meals must be booked by 10:30 a.m. on the list in the dining hall. Please indicate any special dietary requirements. If you are taking a course, please notify your course leader.
Normal serving times: breakfast: 8:00–9:00 a.m., lunch 12:00–1:00 p.m., dinner: 5:00–6:00 p.m.
Students on applied, degree and master's courses, as well as guest researchers, can store and prepare food in the kitchens in the accommodation or eat in the dining hall at the regular meal price. Here too, meals must be booked by 10:30 a.m. on the list in the dining rooms.

Rest room

There is a rest room on the first floor next to the lifts in the Lars Afzelius Lab.

Accommodation

Tjärnö has two accommodation facilities, the white and red accommodation facilities, with room for nearly 100 people.

Lost property

Leave any items you find at reception. This is also where you should go if you have lost something.

Fault reporting

Lost key
If you lock yourself out or lose your room key/access card during office hours, please contact reception.
