Abstract

The ribosome has been studied for more than 70 years, and for most of that time it has been considered a passive player in translation. The discovery of both ribosome specialization and the far-reaching consequences of ribosome stalls and collisions has upended this view, and it is now becoming clear that ribosome populations can actively regulate key cellular processes. In this talk, Liam will present the work his lab has been doing in this field over the last 5 years. In particular, he will highlight how changes in ribosome composition, localization, or dynamics can affect fundamental cellular processes as diverse as antigen presentation, mitochondrial metabolism, and stem cell identity.
