The Indian election and gender equality

For students and the general public

India, often considered the world’s largest democracy, held national elections this year. The incumbent Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and the BJP party were elected for a third term. In this webinar we will discuss the outcome of the election for women. The seminar is organized by network Gender and Development In Practice (GADIP), a network partner to the School of Global Studies.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Vibhuti Patel, Professor, is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at IMPRI, New Delhi. Active in the Women's rights movement since the 1970s, she is currently associated with the Women’s Research and Action Group and the Institute for Community Organisation and Research in Mumbai.
  • Dr. Kannamma Raman, Professor (ret.), Department of Civics and Politics, University of Mumbai. Her research focus includes the use of social media in elections, women in politics, and the surveillance state. She is currently working on a manuscript on Women in Politics in India. 

Dr. Kannamma Raman and Dr. Vibhuti Patel will speak about the Indian electoral process, gender equality in the parliament and the government and how government policy impacts the lives of women and girls. They will also discuss the role of women’s movements and their strategies for raising the ‘voice’ of women and girls in the struggle for gender equality in policy making and implementation.
