Insurance
You are covered by an accident insurance during school hours and while traveling to and from the University. You are advised to inquire about your private insurance coverage and read the necessary information in case of illness and injury.
Personal injury insurance for all students
University students in Sweden are covered by an accident insurance from Kammarkollegiet, that applies if you have an accident and suffer a bodily injury. It is valid in Sweden and includes accidents that occur during school hours and while traveling directly between your residence and the University.
For example, the insurance can cover medical treatment costs and compensate you for lost of earnings if you are unable to work because of the injury. However, the insurance does not cover property damage.
You are not automatically insured at home, even while studying. You are advised to inquire about your insurance coverage and read the necessary information in case of illness and injury. Depending on your citizenship, the length of your studies in Sweden and whether you are an exchange student or a tuition fee-paying student, different regulations apply.
Need to report an injury?
To report an injury you need to complete a claim form, which you can download on Kammarkollegiets' web. The claim form must be signed by you and the coordinator at your department.
Please note that you also need to report the injury-causing accident to the following authorities the head of your department at the University and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan).
For a complete overview of the terms and conditions, or to download the claim form, visit Kammarkollegiet’s information about the insurance for university students in Sweden.
European Health Insurance Card for students from an EU/EEA country
Before leaving your home country, make sure to apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and bring it with you to Sweden. Showing your EHIC when seeking medical treatment entitles you to the same patient fees as any permanent Swedish resident would pay.
The EHIC covers emergency and necessary medical care. When you visit a doctor, you need to show your EHIC directly.
The European Commissions information about EHIC, including:
- How to apply for the EHIC in your home country.
- What you should do if you cannot be issued an EHIC.
- What types of treatments are covered by the EHIC.
EHIC for students from the Nordic countries
Students from Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway do not need to show their EHIC. All they need to do in order to pay the same patient fees as any Swedish citizen would pay is show their ID card or passport and provide their address in their home country.

Students staying in Sweden for over a year
All students who are planning to study in Sweden for at least one year must register in the Swedish population register and are then entitled to medical care under the same conditions as permanent Swedish residents. You register once you arrive in Sweden. You will then be issued a personal identity number, or personnummer.
Personal identity numbers and coordination numbers infromation from the Swedish Tax Agency
From the moment you apply for a personnummer, you are entitled to medical care (emergency or planned medical treatment) under the same terms and conditions as for permanent Swedish residents. For more information about the terms and conditions, check Rules and rights on 1177.
We strongly recommend that you arrange insurance coverage for your travels to Sweden and for the time until you apply for a personnummer, as medical treatment can be very expensive without any insurance.
