Disciplinary matters

A suspected disciplinary offence, for example cheating, can lead to a disciplinary matter. Learn more about the process leading up to a possible disciplinary measure and what kind of support you can get.

What may lead to a disciplinary matter?

Accordin to Chapter 10, Section 1 of the Higher Education Ordinance, the university may invoke disciplinary measures against students who:

  1. Use prohibited aids or other methods to attempt to deceive during examinations or other forms of assessment of study performance. (This is what is commonly referred to as cheating, which you can read more about on Cheating and plagiarism.)
  2. Disrupt or obstruct teaching or tests.
  3. Disrupt activities in the University Library other special establishments within the university.
  4. Subject another student or member of staff at the university to harassment or sexual harassment as referred to in Chapter 1, Section 4 of the Discrimination Act (2008:567).

Disciplinary measures

Disciplinary measures means a warning or suspension from studies for a maximum of six months. The most common disciplinary measure decided on when a student has attempted to deceive during an examination is suspension from their studies for six weeks.

If reported for a disciplinary offence

If you have been reported as suspected of a disciplinary offence, you will be contacted via the e-mail provided by the university, unless you have entered a different e-mail address yourself. You will be given the opportunity to respond and provide an explanation for the information in the report. Pending a decision on the disciplinary matter, you may participate in teaching and examinations.

There is a procedure that describes the handling of disciplinary matters and how the responsibility for tasks in the handling is distributed within the University of Gothenburg.

You can download the procedure from the Laws and Regulations page.
