Options within the programme
In the Master's Programme in Earth Sciences you can specialize in geology or climatology. In the programme structure you can see which courses are offered within each specialization.
If you want to take courses beyond the regular programme structure, there are some things you need to consider. To obtain a Master's Degree in Earth Sciences from us, you need to have studied a total of 120 credits. If you began studying in the Master's programme in Earth Sciences in the fall semester 2023 or earlier, 60 credits of these must be at advanced level and belong to the main field of study of Earth Sciences. The respective course syllabus states which main field of study area the course belongs to.
Your Master's Degree in Earth Sciences may contain a maximum of 30 credits at first cycle level and they may not be included in your qualifying Bachelor's Degree.
Prerequisites for program courses
Please read the prerequisites for the courses you apply for the next semester to ensure that you are eligible, especially if you are interested in a course that does not belong to the specialization you have studied before.
If we propose a course that you are not eligible for under a specific qartile in the program structure, you can apply for another course at our Department or other Swedish universities. Please contact the study counseling if you want support in your study planning: svl@gvc.gu.se
Degree project
It is a good idea to start thinking about and planning your thesis well in advance as many scientific projects require preparation. In addition, before you can register for a thesis course, you need to find a thesis supervisor and submit a registration form along with a project plan and risk assessment.
You can choose to do a 30, 45 or 60 credit degree project.
More information about the degree project is available in the course room in Canvas after you have been registered for the degree project course.
Previous examples of degree projects are published in Gothenburg University Publications Electronic Archive (GUPEA)
