About the programme 

The Master´s Programme in Sociology provides rigorous, in-depth research training preparing students for both doctoral studies in the social science and a broad range of professional careers in social research beyond the university. All courses are taught in English and students recruited both domestically and from abroad.

Semester 1

SC2101 Contemporary Sociological Analysis and Horizons (15 credits)
SF2322 Applied Qualitative Research Methods (15 credits)

Semester 2

Elective Courses (30 credits) including opportunity for Erasmus exchange (30 credits) or to follow a selection of courses at our department  including SC2401 Work Placement in Applied/Public sociology (15 credits), SC2209 Emotions in Organizations (7.5 credits), and SC2210 Sustainability Science and Expertise: Sociological Perspectives (7.5 credits). 

Semester 3

SC2205 Social Change (15 credits)
SF2321 Applied Statistical Analysis (15 credits)

During semester 3, an eligibility review takes place for the course SC2501 Master's Thesis in Sociology, 30 credits. Students who do not fulfil the prerequisites for the course (45 credits in sociology at second-cycle level, including 15 credits in advanced studies and 15 credits in methods) are contacted by the study counsellor.

Study Abroad

In the Programme for Master in Sociology you can go on exchange during semester 2 (preferably) and semester 3 (possibly). Before submitting the application for exchange studies, please make sure that the partner university offers courses that you want to study and that the semester dates don’t differ too much from UGOT’s.

Facilities

Teaching takes place in the premises of the Faculty of Social Sciences in the Haga district in central Gothenburg. Lectures and seminars within "Campus Haga" are held in the buildings Dragonen and Sappören (Sprängkullsgatan) as well as Husaren (Husargatan).
