Humanisten
Humanisten is located on Campus Näckrosen – a short walk from Götaplatsen, next to Näckrosdammen and in Renströmsparken. The building is light and spacious, with an impressive staircase stage, a large study area and plenty of space for events.

Opening hours
Closed for summer 19 June–9 August
During the period 19 June–9 August 2026, Humanisten is locked. Students with access rights may enter in accordance with applicable rules and requirements.
Regular opening hours:
- The main entrance at Renströmsgatan 6 is open: Monday–Thursday 8.00–17.00 and Friday 8.00–16.00.
- The entrance at Lundgrensgatan 11 is open Monday–Friday 8.00–16.00.
- The entrance at Lundgrensgatan 9 is locked.
Access for students
During opening hours, the main entrance is open to everyone. Outside opening hours, you can access the building with your GU-card, Monday–Saturday 07.30–21.00.
To use your GU-card access you must be a registered student at the University of Gothenburg with a course linked to the Faculty of Humanities. Note that GU-card access is required at all times for lecture halls and computer rooms.
You do not have access to the premises on Sundays or public holidays.
Accessibility
Outside the main entrance on Renströmsgatan there are two accessible parking spaces and a drop-off area. Tactile guidance paths lead from there to Humanisten and the Humanistiska biblioteket.
Inside the building you will find tactile paths to the information board, Servicecenter, accessible toilets and lifts to all floors. The information board at the main entrance is also available in Braille and shows the location of teaching rooms and group study rooms.
Directions
From Korsvägen:
- Head west along Korsvägen/Södra Vägen towards Nelly Thürings trappor.
- Turn left onto Nelly Thürings trappor.
- Take the stairs.
- Continue along Kerstin Hesselgrens gångväg for 50 m.
- Kerstin Hesselgrens gångväg curves slightly to the left and becomes Curt Weibulls gångväg.
- Turn left onto Renströmsgatan and walk 100 m.
From Götaplatsen:
- Head north-east along Götaplatsen for 24 m.
- Turn right and continue along Götaplatsen for 55 m.
- Turn left onto Karin Kavlis plats and walk 66 m.
- Continue along Fågelsången for 190 m.
- Turn left onto Olof Wijksgatan and walk 23 m.
- Turn right onto Renströmsgatan and walk 170 m.

Navigating Humanisten
Humanisten consists of two connected buildings – C-huset and J-huset. The main entrance is on Renströmsgatan and leads into the foyer of C-huset on floor 3.
The buildings share floors 2, 3 and 4. J-huset also has floors 5 and 6, which are mainly used for staff and administrative offices.

Lecture halls and rooms
Humanisten has three named halls. Other rooms are named after their location – C250 means C-huset, floor 2, for example.

Trappan
At the heart of J-huset is Trappan – a staircase stage with padded seating on the landings, perfect for a spontaneous chat or a break between lectures. Around Trappan you will find group study rooms, teaching rooms, lecture halls and a drama studio. There is also a large projector, useful for talks and film screenings.
Study spaces
On floors 3 and 4 you will find plenty of study spaces – both booths for focused individual study and larger tables for group work. The open study environment includes glass-enclosed group study rooms with whiteboards and power sockets.
On floor 2 there is computer room C225B with seven computers. Access is with your GU-card.
Floor 3 - entrance level
On the entrance level, study spaces are mainly found near the entrance, by the staircase and outside rooms C362 and C364.
Floor 4
On floor 4, study spaces are mainly found near the staircase, close to rooms C442 and C454.
The Humanities Library
Next to Humanisten is the Humanities Library, with books and journals covering the humanities and cultural studies. Read more about the Humanities Library
Food and refreshments
On the entrance level you will find Café Näckrosen, serving coffee, sandwiches and snacks. One floor up is Restaurang Näckrosen, where you can get a hot lunch.
On floors 3 and 4, behind the main staircase, there are kitchenettes where you can heat food and wash up.
Rest rooms
There are rest rooms on floors 2, 3 and 4, available to all students. You can borrow a key from Servicecenter in the foyer on floor 3.
Quiet room
The faculty's Quiet room is a place to step away for a moment of reflection when everyday life feels overwhelming. The room is open to everyone seeking stillness, contemplation and calm – regardless of faith or worldview. You will find it on the entrance level, J301.
Practical information
Defibrillators
Defibrillators are located at the following places in Humanisten:
- Floor 2: J-huset, outside J236 – just inside the entrance at Lundgrensgatan 11.
- Floor 3: C-huset, outside C350.
- Floor 4: C-huset, outside C442 – on the brick wall at the junction between the old and new buildings, by the entrance to the Department of Languages and Literatures.
- Floor 5: J-huset, outside J594 – on the wall behind the J-huset lift, in the corridor between the departments. Note: This defibrillator is located in an area not accessible to the public and is therefore not registered in the Swedish Defibrillator Registry.
