"Welcome to the Master's Programme in European Studies, which is offered by the Centre for European Studies within the Department of Political Science. Below, you will find the details of the programme's four-semester structure. We wish you the best of luck in your studies!

Programme structure
Semester 1
The Social Science Track (MAES)
During the first semester, you will study three mandatory core courses:
- EU2112 European Heritage and Identity
- EU2113 European Integration Current Research and Theory
- EU2122 Integrating European Markets.
The Humanities Track (HMAES)
During the first semester, you will study three mandatory core courses:
- EU2112 European Heritage and Identity
- EU2114 European Borderlands
- EU2123 Political and Public Spheres and Spaces in European History and Culture.
Semester 2
This applies to both tracks.
In the second semester of your studies, you have the option to take courses either in Sweden or abroad. You also have the opportunity to combine your studies with a half-semester internship. In addition, you have the flexibility to choose to study in Sweden for the entire semester, study abroad for the entire semester, or dedicate the entire semester to an internship.
The first and second halves of the semester have the same structure. You can choose between:
- Elective course in a social science discipline in Sweden or abroad. The education administrator will email you a list of available courses to choose from.
- EU2430 Internship (15 hec)
- EU2420 Internship (30 hec)
- Elective course in a social science discipline in Sweden or abroad (30 hec).
Semester 3
This applies to both tracks.
During the first half of the third semester, you can choose from one of the following courses:
During the second half of the semester, you will take a methodology course. You can choose from one of these:
- SF2323 Applied Qualitative Research Methods, problems and design
- SF2322 Applied Qualitative Research Methods
- SF2324 Introduction to Applied Research Design and Quantitative Research Methods for Social Scientists
- SF2321 Applied Statistical Analysis.
Semester 4
This applies to both tracks.
In the final and concluding semester, you will work on your Master's thesis in European Studies: EU2500 Master's Thesis in European Studies (30 hec).

To apply for courses within the programme
As a student, you must submit your course applications for the upcoming semester through universityadmission.se. To secure your spot, it's important to apply for the correct courses, follow the application process correctly, submit your application on time, and accept your place after the first round of selection. Before each application round, the education administrator will email you information about which courses to apply for.

Student groups

There are two student groups exclusively for those studying European Studies: SG Europa and Brännpunkt Europa. SG Europa ensures you have a rewarding, safe, and fun time studying at the University of Gothenburg. Brännpunkt Europa organizes lectures with both researchers and top politicians.
